Thanks for this great response @Jo_Lis! To answer your question, I highly doubt whether Cordyceps could evolve to harm animal bodies. It is doing just fine where it is! Of course, I don't control evolution so that is just a highly educated prediction. I did study mycology very deeply when I was an undergraduate and beginning graduate student many many years ago. Fascinating creatures, for sure!
